Start to finish on the factory floor

A custom handbag is not “sewn then shipped.” It moves through cutting, sewing, edge finishing, hardware, packing, and QC—with material and sample approval upstream of all of that.

This overview matches how programmes run on our primary path: the Huadu, Guangzhou floor. Private-label and unbranded orders follow the same production logic; branding and packing lines differ by brief.

Before the line starts

Bulk does not start from a sketch alone.

Brief and quote (style, materials, qty band—site MOQ from 500 pcs per style; larger programmes quoted to brief)
Sample stage — pattern, material lock, revisions; sampling typically about two weeks after specs and materials are locked
Approval + order confirmation
Material purchase and incoming check

Only then does cutting begin against the approved sample and PO.

Cutting

Patterns are nested on leather, PU, or fabric according to the locked material.

What happens

Correct pattern version for the approved size
Panel cutting (die, CNC, or hand cut depending on material and volume)
Parts pairing and bundling by bag
Marking for pockets, logo, and hardware positions where needed

Cutting errors multiply through the whole order—incoming material QC and pattern control matter here.

Sewing

Panels become a bag shell and lining.

Typical sequence (varies by style)

Prepare pockets and small parts
Assemble lining
Join face panels; attach piping or binders if specified
Set lining into shell
Close main seams; reinforce stress points

Stitch type, SPI, and thread colour should match the tech pack. In-process checks catch skipped stitches and wrong pocket placement before the bag is fully closed.

Edge paint

Cut edges on leather and many PU styles are painted or finished rather than left raw.

Paint or finish applied in coats as specified
Drying / curing time before rough handling
Colour match to the approved sample

Edge paint cracking or uneven coverage is a common final-QC find—better caught in-process after first flex checks.

Hardware

Zippers, rivets, D-rings, clasps, logo plates, and feet go on at defined stations.

Checks

Correct finish and part number vs BOM
Secure setting (no spinning rivets, no loose zipper stops)
Function: full zipper travel, clasp alignment
Logo hardware position vs approved sample

Custom molds and tooling, when required, are usually handled as a separate line item and completed before or with the sample stage—not improvised on the bulk line.

Packing

Packing is part of the product for retail-ready programmes.

Common elements

Clean and final trim
Polybag and/or tissue
Dust bag, hangtag, care card if specified
Carton packing with agreed quantity and marks
Palletisation rules if required for the forwarder

Unbranded bulk packing can be simpler; say which you need in the brief so labour and materials are quoted correctly.

QC before goods leave

Inspection runs as incoming (materials), in-process (cut/sew/hardware), and final (finished bag + packing). Brands should agree defect definitions and report format before production—not only at the container.

After pass, goods move to FOB handoff. Ports are typically Shenzhen or Guangzhou. Bulk lead time is typically about two months FOB after sample approval and order confirmation.
